Vodacom Group expects Safaricom Ethiopia to breakeven in 4 years

The Group’s Medium and long term ambition for Safaricom Ethiopia
• US$1.5 – 2.0 billion investment in capex over the next 5 years.
• Network rollout of 10 000 to 12 000 sites in the next 10 years.
• Safaricom Ethiopia to reach EBITDA break-even in 4 years and an EBITDA margin of 40% in 10 years.

To be considered for the Regional Awards, the applicant and her business must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• For-profit
• Early-stage: between 1 and 6 years of licensed/registered operations
• Revenue generation: The business should be generating revenue from the sales of its products and/or services for at least 1 year as of the date of application.
• Positive impact
• Leadership: The applicant must be a woman and she must fill one of the main leadership positions, for example as CEO, COO, CTO, General Manager, or Managing Director of the business.
• Time commitment
• US$ 100,000 grant for each first-place awardee
• US$ 60,000 grant for each second-place awardee
• US$ 30,000 grant for each third-place awardee


Amhara Bank to Start Operations the Coming Saturday

Amhara Bank has announced it will start operations on June 18, 2022 with 70 branches. It will start operations with a signed up capital 6.5 billion birr and paid up capital of 4.8 billion birr. It has also said that it will increase its number of branches to over a 100 by July 7th.

Leading up to its opening on Saturday the 18th of June, the bank has various activities lined up including a Blood Donation program this Thursday and an Arts and Cultural night on Friday.


M-Pesa to transact in 200 countries after deal with Visa

Millions of M-Pesa customers can now pay for goods and services in more than 200 countries under a deal with Visa that further cements the platform’s leading position as a mobile money service provider, says Business Daily Africa.

Safaricom inked the deal with Visa to form M-Pesa GlobalPay Visa Virtual card that allows them to transact up to ETB 66,000 per payment and ETB 133,000 per day.

Ethiopia: 4th on the Top 10 African Countries list of Hotel Chain Pipeline Survey

Ethiopia has been identified by W Hospitality Group as one of the top 10 countries with the most hotel rooms under construction in 2021. It has been stated that the country has 33 hotels with 5,886 hotel rooms in the pipeline of which 65% or on the construction phase.

Egypt tops the list with 19,272 hotel rooms in the pipeline, followed by Nigeria with 9,032 hotel rooms and Morocco with 6,084 hotel rooms.

A $100 million Coca-Cola bottling plant inaugurated in Sebeta

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) has officially inaugurated a new $100 million Coca-Cola bottling plant at Sebeta on May 31st.

The new plant is set to unlock export opportunities, increase local production and generate 500 jobs in the country.

Horizon has darkened with the prospect of another global recession: IMF Managing Director

On May 23rd at the Global Economic Outlook session at Davos 2022, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, opened with a cautious note, explaining that since the IMF’s latest forecasts the “horizon has darkened.”

She was particularly concerned about food price shocks and how anxiety around the world over accessing affordable food was “hitting the roof.” Georgieva went on to point out that stalling action on the climate crisis and the slump in digital money assets was further darkening the outlook.

Google Facing A Lawsuit From Match Group

Accused of monopolizing its platform and charging exorbitant fees for payment services, Google is facing a serious challenge in court.

Though the company reduced its app store service fees from 30% to 15% last year, Match Group, the owner of dating apps like Tinder is suing Google for forcing apps to use their billing system and then taking an unfair portion of the payments. If considered an illegal monopoly this could have consequences across the technology ecosystem.

Apple and other giants are facing similar lawsuits and pressure from users and regulators.


Ethiopia Raises Reserve Requirements For Banks Whilst The US Raises Interest Rates To Curb Inflation

The National Bank of Ethiopia announced that banks are expected to raise their capital reserves by 21% by the end of the 3rd quarter. This is expected to help reduce inflation rates in the country.

Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.5 percent this week.

The European Central Bank is also being urged to increase interest by July, as well as taking various other measures to curb Europe's record inflation of 7.5%.


The Ethiopian Agriculture Ministry Touts 600,000 ha Of Land Irrigated With Two Rounds Of Summer Irrigation

The 600,000 ha of land is expected to yield close to 24 million quintals of crops.

An additional one million hectares of land (about the size of Jamaica) will be dedicated to the production of wheat.
