I really want to see someone from Ethiopia make it big without going abroad. Almost everyone I know who has a successful story—whether it’s in business, art, or just living a “modern” life with travel and experiences—has had some kind of exposure to the outside world.
Take cafés, for example. The most beautiful and high end ones are usually owned by people who have studied or lived abroad. The same goes for vlogs and creative projects—many of the best ones come from people with international experience. Of course, there are locals who have built success without ever leaving, but they’re much fewer in number.
It makes me wonder—what’s missing? Is it just about exposure? Do we need to open our minds more? What is globalization not doing for us?
My friends and I often look at successful people in their 30s and think, Wow, how did they make it? And then, almost every time, we find out they went abroad. But what if we want to make it here? What does it take to build something great without having to leave?
