Motivation for students is a topic we’ve often discussed in edtech, yet the reasons for lack of motivation can be incredibly nuanced. For January’s EdTech Ethiopia, we will take a close look at the psycho-social forces impacting young people today, and how that may be affecting their academic performance. This session will feature researchers and experts in the fields of mental health and psychology, working across public and private school settings. We will provide a firsthand look at the latest research and interventions to better inform solution design.

Shega was honored to participate in the Internet Development Conference (IDC) organized by the Internet Society in Addis Ababa from January 22 to 24, 2025. IDC 2025 united key stakeholders to strengthen Internet infrastructure and regulatory frameworks in African IGAD countries.

During the conference, Shega engaged in discussions on the digitization of financial services in Ethiopia. Our Chief Operating Officer, Melka Girma, represented us in a panel highlighting our contributions to developing digital financial services.

The panel showcased our flagship initiative, https://digitalfinance.shega.co/, which empowers stakeholders with essential data and insights for navigating Ethiopia's DFS landscape. The conference served as a valuable platform for open dialogue and collaboration on the latest trends in digital finance.

A 2024 GSMA report explores the potential of mobile money to drive financial inclusion in Ethiopia.

Key findings:

-Currently, Ethiopia has lower financial inclusion rates compared to its East African neighbors.

-The government targets to increase account ownership to 70% and digital payment usage to 49% by 2025 through mobile money expansion.
