1. Introduction
History comes from the Greek word Istoria, meaning "inquiry" or "an account of one’s inquiries." 🏛️
It studies past human activities, beginning with the development of writing (~5,500 years ago). 📝
Prehistory refers to the time before writing existed, studied through archaeology & anthropology. 🏺
Historians research & analyze past events using historical facts & evidence. 🔍

Helps us understand the past, present & future 🌍
Develops critical thinking, research, & analytical skills 🧠
Strengthens national identity & democratic values 🏛️
Makes us more informed & active citizens 👥
3. Historiography & Historical Interpretation
Historiography: The study of how history is recorded & transmitted. 📖
Herodotus (484–425 BC) = "Father of History" 🏛️
Leopold Von Ranke (1795–1886) = "Father of Modern Historiography" 📜
History is studied objectively with rules & methods but may still involve interpretation. 🔬
4. Sources of History
📌 Primary Sources: First-hand materials from the time of the event.
Examples: Manuscripts, chronicles, diaries, letters, artifacts, coins, maps, legal records. 🗿
📌 Secondary Sources: Interpretations of primary sources.
Examples: Books, articles, journals, oral traditions, biographies, movies. 🎥

5. Dating in History
Chronology: Arranging events based on time. ⏳
BC (Before Christ) & AD (Anno Domini) → Gregorian Calendar ✝️
BH (Before Hijra) & AH (After Hijra) → Islamic Calendar ☪️
Ethiopian Calendar is 7–8 years behind the Gregorian Calendar 🇪🇹

Decade = 10 years 🔟
Century = 100 years 💯
Millennium = 1,000 years 🏛️
