##Prevention of childhood asthma before birth##
Childhood asthma can be prevented before birth.
Well-established risk factors for asthma in unborn children include parental asthma, smoking and prematurity.
Having a mother who is an active or a passive smoker also increases the risk of having childhood asthma.
Current studies suggest that maternal obesity, maternal use of antibiotics or paracetamol, maternal stress, cesarean birth, neonatal infection by RSV, infant exposure to mold and air pollution increase the risk of childhood asthma. These findings need to be confirmed through interventional studies or well-designed prospective studies.
Similarly, taking inhaled corticosteroids early on and making sure asthma is well-controlled during pregnancy reduces the risk for asthma in child.
Likewise, low vitamin D and E intake during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of childhood asthma in the first 10 years of life.
On the contrary, vitamin A supplement during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of asthma in children.
