Grade 11: Animals π¦π¦
Characteristics of Animals & Classification π§¬
Animals are diverse and exist in almost every environment on Earth! π Understanding their characteristics helps us classify them into different groups.
πΎ Key Characteristics of Animals:
β Eukaryotic Cells 𧫠β They have complex cells with a nucleus.
β Multicellular π¬ β Made up of multiple cells.
β Heterotrophic π½οΈ β Depend on other organisms for food.
β Movement πΆββοΈ β Most animals can move at some stage of life.
β Growth & Development π£β‘οΈπ β They grow from young to adult stages.
β Reproduction πΌ β Can reproduce sexually or asexually.
Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates π¦π―
Animals are mainly divided into two major groups based on whether they have a backbone or not:
1οΈβ£ Invertebrates (No Backbone) π
Make up about 97% of all animal species!
Some have an exoskeleton (hard outer body) for protection.
Examples: Spiders π·οΈ, Insects π¦, Worms πͺ±, Jellyfish πͺΌ, Snails π.
2οΈβ£ Vertebrates (Have a Backbone) π¦
More complex body structures with an internal skeleton.
Examples: Mammals π, Birds π¦ , Reptiles π¦, Amphibians πΈ, Fish π .

1οΈβ£ Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of animals?
A) Being multicellular
B) Producing their own food
C) Having eukaryotic cells
D) Growing and developing
2οΈβ£ Which of the following animals is an invertebrate?
A) Snake π
B) Butterfly π¦
C) Dolphin π¬
D) Eagle π¦
3οΈβ£ What percentage of all animals are invertebrates?
A) 10%
B) 25%
C) 50%
D) 97%
4οΈβ£ What is the main difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
A) Vertebrates have a backbone, invertebrates do not.
B) Invertebrates are always larger than vertebrates.
C) Vertebrates can only live on land.
