Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) signed the Road Transport Traffic Control Regulation into law in August.

Following its adoption into the country’s transport legislative framework, anecdotal reports of hefty penalties have proliferated. Understanding what these penalties are and how they are levied could prove beneficial for drivers.

Regulation 557/2016 introduces 21 categories of offenses levied depending on the frequency and type of violation. While some violations may be passed with a simple warning for first-time offenders others could entail suspension of one’s driver’s license for up to a year and a half.

A few categories of violations may translate to 20,000-birr fines. Pedestrians are also subject to fines of up to 150 birr for violations like jaywalking while cyclists without a helmet could face up to 500 birr in fines.

Failing to settle fines within the first ten days entails a gradual increment in interest which starts at 5%.
