As we approach the 2024 U.S. election, many applicants are expressing significant concerns about how the election outcome may impact F-1 and B-1 visa policies under a potential second Trump administration. Here are my insights on this critical issue.
1. F-1 Visa (Student Visa):
During the previous Trump administration, 4,428 F-1 visas were issued to Ethiopian students (excluding F-2 dependents). In contrast, the Biden administration has issued approximately 6,250 F-1 visas during its nearly complete term. Bear in mind 2020 was a Covid year with the embassy processing almost no Application for 9 months.
2. B-1/B-2 Visa (Visitor Visa):
Under the Trump administration, 47,577 B-1/B-2 visitor visas were issued. The Biden administration has recently issued 62,338 of these visas; however, it is important to consider the impact of COVID-19 in 2020 on these numbers.
3. Other Non-Immigrant Visas:
Similar trends can be observed in other non-immigrant visa categories. While J-1 visas had a slightly higher approval rate during Trump's term—likely due to fewer applicants or a favorable outlook on qualified candidates—both Democratic and Republican administrations have treated Ethiopian visa applicants similarly.
In conclusion, students and visitors should anticipate similar challenges when applying for visas during a potential second Trump administration.
