Grade 11: Animals 🦁🦋
Characteristics of Animals & Classification 🧬
Animals are diverse and exist in almost every environment on Earth! 🌍 Understanding their characteristics helps us classify them into different groups.
🐾 Key Characteristics of Animals:
✅ Eukaryotic Cells 🧫 – They have complex cells with a nucleus.
✅ Multicellular 🔬 – Made up of multiple cells.
✅ Heterotrophic 🍽️ – Depend on other organisms for food.
✅ Movement 🚶♂️ – Most animals can move at some stage of life.
✅ Growth & Development 🐣➡️🐔 – They grow from young to adult stages.
✅ Reproduction 🍼 – Can reproduce sexually or asexually.
Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates 🦑🐯
Animals are mainly divided into two major groups based on whether they have a backbone or not:
1️⃣ Invertebrates (No Backbone) 🐛
Make up about 97% of all animal species!
Some have an exoskeleton (hard outer body) for protection.
Examples: Spiders 🕷️, Insects 🦗, Worms 🪱, Jellyfish 🪼, Snails 🐌.
2️⃣ Vertebrates (Have a Backbone) 🦁
More complex body structures with an internal skeleton.
Examples: Mammals 🐘, Birds 🦅, Reptiles 🦎, Amphibians 🐸, Fish 🐠.
❓ Question Time: Choose the Correct Answer!
1️⃣ Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of animals?
A) Being multicellular
B) Producing their own food

2️⃣ Which of the following animals is an invertebrate?
A) Snake 🐍
B) Butterfly 🦋
C) Dolphin 🐬
D) Eagle 🦅
3️⃣ What percentage of all animals are invertebrates?
A) 10%
B) 25%
C) 50%
D) 97%
4️⃣ What is the main difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
A) Vertebrates have a backbone, invertebrates do not.
B) Invertebrates are always larger than vertebrates.
C) Vertebrates can only live on land.
