Topic: Efficacy and Safety of a Low-FODMAP Diet in Combination with a Gluten-Free Diet for Adult Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background:
▪️Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involves symptoms like altered bowel habits, bloating, and abdominal pain. A low-FODMAP gluten-free diet (LF-GFD) has been proposed as a treatment for symptom relief.
Objective:
To evaluate the effectiveness of LF-GFD in managing IBS symptoms and its impact on psychological health.
Methods:
▪️Analysis of 4 randomized controlled trials and 4 cohort studies involving 437 patients (221 LF-GFD, 216 GFD).
Outcomes measured: bloating, pain (VAS), IBS severity (IBS-SSS), quality of life (IBS-QoL), depression (SDS), and anxiety (SAS).
Results:
Symptom relief:
▪️Reduced bloating (RR = -0.58; P = 0.0010).
▪️Reduced pain (RR = -0.42; P = 0.005).
▪️Improved IBS-SSS (MD = -1.42; P = 0.03).
▪️Better IBS-QoL (MD = 3.75; P = 0.008).
Psychological impact:
▪️Lower depression scores (SDS MD = -2.56; P < 0.00001).
▪️Lower anxiety scores (SAS MD = -4.30; P < 0.0001).
Conclusion:
LF-GFD significantly improves IBS symptoms, quality of life, and psychological health, offering an effective therapy for IBS management.
