Epidemiology of diabetes mellitus
Prevalence:
▪️The number of people living with diabetes increased from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022.
▪️14% of adults aged 18 and older had diabetes, up from 7% in 1990.
▪️Prevalence has risen faster in low- and middle-income countries compared to high-income countries.
Treatment and Medication Coverage:
▪️In 2022, more than half (59% of adults aged 30+) of people living with diabetes did not take medication for their condition.
▪️Treatment coverage was lowest in low- and middle-income countries.
Health Impacts:
In 2021, diabetes caused:
▪️1.6 million direct deaths.
▪️530,000 kidney disease deaths.
▪️11% of cardiovascular deaths.
▪️Nearly half (47%) of diabetes-related deaths occurred before age 70.
