An Expert from Ethiopian Maritime Authority Briefs on Preparatory Requirements for Future Maritime Program Launch in AMiT, AMU
Arba Minch Institute of Technology (AMIT) organized an expert pre-launch preparatory requirements briefing program in collaboration with the Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA) to realize the long-anticipated launch of a Maritime Engineering program. This initiative aims to enhance Ethiopia's maritime capabilities despite the country being landlocked.
Muluneh Lemma (PhD), Scientific Director of AMIT, opening the session, outlined the significant progress made towards launching the program including the completion of essential documents and guidelines. The importance of the brief is to ensure the program meets both national and international standards, he emphasized. Dr. Muluneh acknowledged the support received from various parties including the Gamo Zone Administration, yet several factors have contributed to the launch of the program.
Bogale Gebremariam (PhD), Vice President for Academic Affairs, addressing the gathering, emphasized Ministry of Education has had special attention to Engineering academic areas, so it is with such focus alignment that the Institute of Technology has been working to open a maritime engineering program since 2022. Once launched at the university, the maritime program will create various job opportunities for the students, he explained. Consequently, he stressed, to select quality students based on the established criteria, it’s the necessity to administer similar professional training based briefings setting the national and international standards of the program. Finally, this collaboration between AMU and the Ethiopian Maritime Authority holds significant potential not only in expanding educational offerings but also in fostering national development and international competitiveness, Dr. Ing. Bogale remarked.
Chief Engineer Shewangizaw Kassa, a Senior Marine Surveyor and Examiner at the EMA, provided an overview of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its relevance to maritime education in Ethiopia. He discussed critical aspects such as regulatory compliance, curriculum development, and the necessary infrastructure for effective maritime training. Similarly, Kiberu Mesfin, CEO of EMA, emphasized the opportunities and challenges facing the maritime sector, the need for high-quality training and the importance of establishing partnerships with international organizations to enhance Ethiopia's maritime capabilities. He also highlighted the projected demand for trained maritime professionals estimating that Ethiopia will require 70,000 skilled individuals in the sector over the next five years.
As Ethiopia continues to develop its maritime strategy, the collaboration between AMIT and the EMA represents a significant step towards building a robust maritime education framework that will ultimately enhance the country's access to international waters and facilitate trade through regional ports. The professional training is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Ethiopia's maritime industry by letting AMU set effective standards for the program to produce quality professionals with its sustained commitment to quality education.
The Vice President for Research and Cooperation, Vice President for Administration and Development, AWTI Scientific Director, AMIT Scientific Director, Deans, Directors, Coordinators, Academics staff, and representatives from the Students Union were in attendance.
