The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority has been building up the ecosystem’s regulatory framework. Hana Tehelku, director general, identified their efforts at partnership with regional markets such as Kenya, Namibia, and Nigeria to entice foreign capital through borrowed best practices. David Wainaina, COO of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), noted the underdeveloped state of Ethiopia’s pension funds compared to Kenya’s, where pension funds are a dominant force in the stock exchange in the NSE. He cautioned that the success of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange will depend on cultivating a solid base of local institutional investors before it can attract foreign capital.
