Remedial Chemistry Unit 3 Part 2
CALII Academy – We Learn for Others 📚🤝🌍
3.4 The Cell and Its Environment
Molecules move in and out of the cell surface membrane, allowing water, nutrients, and waste to pass through.
🔬 Atoms, Ions, Molecules, and Solutions
⚛️ Atoms are the basic units of matter, made up of protons (➕), neutrons (⚪), and electrons (➖).
🧪 Elements consist of only one type of atom (e.g., Hydrogen).
🔋 Ions are atoms that gain or lose electrons, acquiring a charge.
🧬 Molecules
Atoms join together to form molecules. They can be made of the same or different types of atoms. For example, oxygen gas (O₂) consists of two oxygen atoms bonded together.
🌡️ Solids, Liquids, and Gases
🧊 Solid (Ice): Molecules are closely packed and only jiggle in place.
💧 Liquid (Water): Heating makes molecules move faster and spread apart.
💨 Gas (Water Vapor): Further heating makes molecules move so fast that they separate completely into the air.
