Learn from my mistake: don't just study Amharic—start speaking it today!

I spent over ten years reading and listening to English before I finally started speaking. My English is still far from perfect, but it works—it connects me with others, and that is what matters. If I had practiced speaking from day one, I would be fluent by now.
Speaking shows you what to improve and builds your confidence. Deep studying is great, but without practice, you quickly forget what you learn. Speak early, make mistakes, and keep growing!

Imperative Sentences (ትእዛዛዊ አረፍተ ነገሮች)
In Amharic, imperatives are used to give commands, instructions, and advice. While they share similar verb structures, their tone and purpose differ. Example:

Type Male (♂) Female (♀) Plural (👥) English
Command ና! ኑ! Come!
Instruction ጻፍ! Write!
Advice አትጨነቅ! Don't worry!
Advice በርታ! Stay strong!

But what are the differences between commands, instructions, and advice?
1.      Commands (ትእዛዛት) are direct and urgent orders telling someone to do or stop doing something immediately.
o   Example: ተቀመጥ! (Sit down!) (Don't go!)

2.      Instructions (መመሪያዎች) are step-by-step guidance or directions on how to complete a task.
(First wash your hands, then eat.)

3.      Advices (ምክር): are helpful suggestions or recommendations for someone's well-being.
(Drink plenty of water!) (Don't worry!)

1.      Commands (ትእዛዛት) ➡️ Urgency & Authority
Used when someone in authority requires immediate action, spoken with a firm and direct tone. Example:
(The rent due date has passed; prepare the money for me by tomorrow!—Landlord to Tenant)

2.      Instructions (መመሪያዎች) ➡️ Guidance & Process
Used to guide someone step-by-step through a process to complete a task successfully. Example:
(Mix the dough, and when it rises, bake the Injera.)

3.      Advice (ምክር) ➡️ Kindness & Suggestion
Spoken with a gentle and supportive tone to offer a helpful suggestion for someone’s personal benefit. Example:
(Rather than wasting your time on social media, it is better if you learn a useful skill with it.)

Learn Amharic Step-by-Step in 30 Days: A Complete Beginner's Workbook

I Finally Published the Amharic Workbook I’ve Been Dreaming of Making!

Confused and desperate, the palace servants took the hungry baby out to the marketplace, hoping to find a suitable woman to nurse him.
When his sister saw him in their arms, she instantly recognized him, but she did not give any indication of who she was.
Seeing their confusion, she stepped forward and said: "Shall I direct you to a household who will him for you, and look after him in a good manner?" (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:12)
The guards grew suspicious, seizing her and asking: "How do you know these people will be sincere and care for him?"
She wisely replied: "They will take care of the child because they want the king to be happy and they hope to receive some reward." and so they let her go.
Safely guided by his sister, they brought the baby to his mother, and the moment she gave him her breast, he accepted it happily.
Rejoicing, the servants sent the glad tidings to the wife of Fir`awn, who then called for the mother, treating her with great kindness.
Not realizing she was the real mother, Asiyah asked her to stay at the palace to nurse the baby.
The mother refused, saying: "I have a husband and children, but if you let me nurse him in my own home, I will do that."
The wife of Fir`awn agreed to this arrangement; thus, Musa's mother would regularly come to the palace to collect her salary and provisions, and Asiyah would always dismiss her with great kindness.
Musa's mother returned home happy, for after a time of intense fear, Allah granted her security, prestige, and ongoing provision.
There was only a short time between her deepest distress and this miracle—about a single day and night.
As Allah says: Then We returned him to his mother, so that she would be comforted and not grieve, and so that she would know that Allah’s promise is true. Yet most of them do not know. (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:13)
When he was returned, she realized his prophetic destiny, raising him both as a beloved child and as an honored Messenger.
And Allah concludes: "But most of them know not." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:13)
People often dislike a situation, yet its consequences bring the greatest good, as Allah's wisdom always prevails.

When the box was opened, they saw it was a child with the most beautiful features.
Allah filled her heart with love for him when she saw him; this was because she was blessed and because Allah wanted to honor her and cause her husband's doom.
Allah says: "Then the household of Fir`awn picked him up, that he might become for them an enemy and a cause of grief." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:8)
Fir`awn, Haman, and their armies were deeply mired in sin and tyranny, and Allah had decreed their ultimate doom.
As Allah says in the Quran: "Verily, Fir`awn, Haman and their armies were sinners." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:8)
The moment Fir`awn saw the infant, he suspected he was from the Children of Israel and instantly drew his sword to kill him.
But his blessed wife, Asiyah, who had no children of her own, was filled with overwhelming love for the baby and bravely stepped in to defend him.
She pleaded with her husband, saying: "A comfort of the eye for me and for you; do not kill him." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:9)
Driven by pride, Fir`awn coldly replied: "For you he may be a comfort, but not for me."
And this was exactly the case: Allah guided Asiyah to Paradise through this child, but God used this child to destroy Fir`awn's empire.
When her child was lost in the river, the heart of Musa's mother became entirely empty, and she could not think of any matter in this world except Musa.
Because of the intensity of her grief, she was very near to disclosing her situation and telling people that she had lost a son.
If Allah had not given her strength and patience in her heart, she would have put herself and her child in danger by telling the truth.
The heart of Moses’ mother became restless; she was about to disclose the secret, had We not reassured her heart so that she would maintain her faith in Allah’s promise. (28:10)
In her distress, she said to his older sister, who was of an age to understand things: "Follow him." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:10)
So she went out to follow his traces, looking for any information about him around the city.
Once baby Musa had settled into the palace, his sister found him and began to watch him secretly from a distance.
As Allah says: "So she watched him from a far place (secretly), and they perceived not." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:11)
In the palace, the king's wife loved him dearly, but when they brought wet nurses to feed him, the baby refused to take milk from any of them.
Because of his honored status with Allah, it was decreed that no one should nurse him except his own mother.

The Story of the Childhood of Prophet Moses in Islam
One night, Pharaoh, the ruler of ancient Egypt, had a deeply terrifying dream.
In his dream, a great fire rushed from Bait al-Maqds (Jerusalem) and consumed all the houses and properties of the Egyptians, leaving the Children of Israel completely untouched.
When he gathered his sorcerers, astrologers, and dream interpreters, they warned him: "A boy will be born from among the Children of Israel who will destroy your kingdom and defeat the Egyptians."
Following this terrifying prophecy, Pharaoh issued a brutal order for all male new born babies of the Children of Israel to be killed and the females to be spared.
However, the native Egyptians (Coptic people) feared that if all the Israelite men died out, they themselves would be forced to do all the heavy labor, so they appealed to Pharaoh.
To address this, Pharaoh modified his decree: male infants would be killed one year and left alive the next year.
Aaron, Musas' older brother was born in the year when babies were spared, while Musa was born in the terrifying year they were being killed.
When Moses' mother became pregnant, by divine care and love, she did not show any outward signs of pregnancy to anyone.
But when she gave birth to a baby boy, she was overcome with intense fear and confusion about how to protect her newborn child.
In this difficult time of anxiety and confusion, it was inspired into her heart and mind what she should do.
As Allah says: "And We inspired the mother of Musa (telling): 'Suckle him, but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily, We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.'" (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:7)
Her house was on the banks of the Nile, so she took a box and made it into a cradle, and started to nurse her child.
When someone came to her that she was afraid of, she would go and put him in that box and put it in the river, and she would tie it with a rope.
One day someone that she was afraid of came to the house, so she went and put the child in that box and put it in the river, however, in her panic, she had forgotten to tie up with rope.
The currents carried the box straight into the heart of her enemy's palace.
The female servants there picked the box up and took it to Firawn's wife.

Welcome to today’s lesson, dear members!

Today, we are continuing our unique and engaging approach to learning Amharic through real-world history and culture. As promised in our previous lesson, where we explored the rescue of baby Moses in Christianity, we are now ready for the second part of our series. Today’s focus is on the story of the childhood of Prophet Musa (Moses) in Islam.

By reading this perspective, you will discover a profoundly moving narrative of maternal grief, divine irony, and absolute hope beautifully detailed in the Holy Quran. And you will expand your Amharic vocabulary and comprehension through this emotional, bilingual storytelling.

In today’s post, shared line by line in both Amharic and English, you’ll discover the miraculous details of Moses' birth, his time in the river, his life in the palace, and the terrifying ultimate end of Pharaoh and his army.

Get ready for an unforgettable narrative! The full story drops in our next post. 🌍

How Baby Moses Was Saved

SEE the little baby crying, and holding onto the lady’s finger. This is Moses. Do you know who the pretty lady is? She is an Egyptian princess, Pharʹaoh’s own daughter.

Moses’ mother hid her baby until he was three months old, because she didn’t want him to be killed by the Egyptians. But she knew that Moses might be found, so this is what she did to save him.

She took a basket and fixed it so that no water would leak in. Then she put Moses into it, and placed the basket in the tall grass along the Nile River. Moses’ sister, Mirʹi·am, was told to stand nearby and see what would happen.

Soon Pharʹaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile River to bathe. Suddenly she saw the basket in the tall grass. She called to one of her servant girls: ‘Go get that basket for me.’ When the princess opened the basket, what a beautiful baby she saw! Little Moses was crying, and the princess felt sorry for him. She didn’t want to have him killed.

Then Mirʹi·am came up. Mirʹi·am asked Pharʹaoh’s daughter: ‘Shall I go and call an Israelite woman to nurse the baby for you?’

‘Please do,’ the princess said.

So Mirʹi·am ran quickly to tell her mother. When Moses’ mother came to the princess, the princess said: ‘Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.’

So Moses’ mother took care of her own child. Later when Moses was old enough, she took him to Pharʹaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her own son. That is how Moses came to grow up in the house of Pharʹaoh.
