Still lifes by the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904)

He didn’t just paint flowers in vases—each bouquet was carefully paired with a fitting vessel: a glass tumbler, a crystal goblet, a woven basket.

The French writer Émile Zola once said of Fantin-Latour’s still lifes:
“These canvases don’t shout at you from across the room. You have to draw close, look long, look patiently. Then their quiet truth reveals itself—and once seen, you’ll return to them again and again.”

The painting depicts a remote, untouched forest. Towering trees stretch skyward, their dense canopy blocking the light. Through them, smaller, frail saplings struggle to grow—doomed by the lack of sunlight. Beneath the trees lie countless fallen, dry branches.
