History comes from the Greek word Istoria, meaning "inquiry" or "an account of oneโs inquiries." ๐๏ธ
It studies past human activities, beginning with the development of writing (~5,500 years ago). ๐
Prehistory refers to the time before writing existed, studied through archaeology & anthropology. ๐บ
Historians research & analyze past events using historical facts & evidence. ๐

Helps us understand the past, present & future ๐
Develops critical thinking, research, & analytical skills ๐ง
Strengthens national identity & democratic values ๐๏ธ
Makes us more informed & active citizens ๐ฅ
3. Historiography & Historical Interpretation
Historiography: The study of how history is recorded & transmitted. ๐
Herodotus (484โ425 BC) = "Father of History" ๐๏ธ
Leopold Von Ranke (1795โ1886) = "Father of Modern Historiography" ๐
History is studied objectively with rules & methods but may still involve interpretation. ๐ฌ
4. Sources of History
๐ Primary Sources: First-hand materials from the time of the event.
Examples: Manuscripts, chronicles, diaries, letters, artifacts, coins, maps, legal records. ๐ฟ
๐ Secondary Sources: Interpretations of primary sources.
Examples: Books, articles, journals, oral traditions, biographies, movies. ๐ฅ
โ Cross-checking is essential to verify authenticity & avoid misinformation.
5. Dating in History
Chronology: Arranging events based on time. โณ
BC (Before Christ) & AD (Anno Domini) โ Gregorian Calendar โ๏ธ

Ethiopian Calendar is 7โ8 years behind the Gregorian Calendar ๐ช๐น
