Ethiopia has imported more than 10.684 million quintals of fertilizer as of April 20, 2025, achieving 44.5% of its planned supply target for the 2024/2025 production season, according to the Ethiopian Maritime Authority.
The government aims to import 2.4 million metric tons—equivalent to 24 million quintals—to support the upcoming agricultural cycle, which is vital for food security and the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers.
In addition to the fertilizer already inside the country, over 5,705 metric tons remain at port, pending inland transportation. The majority of the imported fertilizer—895,722 metric tons—was moved using cross-border dry cargo trucks, while 172,690 metric tons were transported by rail, highlighting the strategic use of multimodal transport routes.
